Zambia’s Agriculture Ministry unveils strategic plan to boost sector growth

Zambia’s Ministry of Agriculture has launched a comprehensive strategic plan aimed at accelerating growth, improving productivity, and strengthening resilience across the country’s agricultural sector.

The plan, covering key priorities for the coming years, focuses on modernizing farming practices, expanding irrigation, promoting mechanization, and supporting smallholder farmers with inputs and technical assistance. It also seeks to enhance value addition, strengthen market access, and foster private sector investment in agribusiness.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Reuben P. Mtolo, said the initiative is designed to position agriculture as a central driver of national economic growth while ensuring food security and climate resilience.

“Through targeted interventions, innovation, and partnerships, we aim to transform Zambia’s agriculture sector into a more productive, competitive, and sustainable system,” he said.

The strategic plan also emphasizes research and development, extension services, and capacity building for farmers. In addition, the government will prioritize digital solutions, including e-voucher systems and mobile platforms, to facilitate input distribution and improve access to market information.

Officials highlighted that the plan aligns with Zambia’s broader development agenda, focusing on inclusive growth, job creation, and increased revenues from agriculture, while reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing resilience to climate shocks.

Implementation will involve collaboration with local and international partners, financial institutions, and community stakeholders to ensure measurable outcomes and long-term sector sustainability.

The Ministry said progress reports will be published regularly to track results, with the ultimate goal of increasing productivity, improving livelihoods, and contributing significantly to Zambia’s economic development.
