Egypt rolls out 975 projects worth US$13bn to develop Sinai since 2014

Egypt has implemented 975 development projects in the Sinai Peninsula worth about 638 billion Egyptian pounds (US$13 billion) since 2014, as part of efforts to boost investment and achieve balanced economic growth, officials said.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired a high-level meeting to review progress and accelerate implementation, describing Sinai as a strategic gateway for development and a key pillar of the national economy.

The meeting brought together senior officials, including Hani Sewilam, Alaa Farouk, and presidential adviser Osama Askar, alongside regional governors.

Madbouly said the government is working to attract more investment by expanding infrastructure, creating jobs and building integrated urban communities across the peninsula.

The projects span key sectors such as agriculture, industry, tourism and public services, including education, healthcare, supply systems and telecommunications.

Authorities have also prioritised improving the investment climate through upgrades to transport networks, water and sanitation systems, electricity and energy infrastructure, as well as petroleum and gas facilities.

Major projects include the development of ports and airports, notably in North Sinai, aimed at strengthening connectivity and supporting economic activity.

Officials said the initiatives are part of a broader strategy to increase population density in Sinai and integrate it more fully into the national economy.

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has directed the expansion of development efforts in the region, highlighting its strong potential in agriculture and tourism.

Water and irrigation projects have played a central role in the programme.

The Sheikh Jaber Canal is serving about 275,000 feddans of land, supporting agricultural expansion in areas such as Sahl El-Tina and Bir El-Abd.

The Bahr El-Baqar water treatment system is irrigating more than 270,000 feddans through a network of pumping stations, helping to reclaim land and boost food production.

Agriculture Minister Farouk said the initiatives are aligned with Egypt Vision 2030, aimed at enhancing food security and promoting sustainable development.

Local authorities have also rolled out infrastructure and social programmes, including sanitation projects and economic empowerment initiatives.

Minister of Local Development Manal Awad said efforts include upgrading slaughterhouses in South Sinai and Arish, with plans to involve private sector operators.

Tourism development is also a focus, particularly through the Holy Family Trail, which authorities aim to transform into a major investment destination meeting international environmental standards.

Regional governors also highlighted emerging projects, including green hydrogen initiatives and industrial zone development.

Madbouly called for faster implementation of services supporting these projects, as well as streamlined procedures for investors and improved transport links to enhance Sinai’s attractiveness.

Despite ongoing challenges, officials said the scale of investment reflects Egypt’s long-term commitment to transforming Sinai into a key driver of economic growth and regional development.
