AirAsia X postpones Bahrain route launch over Middle East tensions

Malaysian long-haul carrier AirAsia X has postponed the launch of its planned Bahrain service until at least August, citing ongoing conflict in the Middle East and broader regional uncertainty affecting operations.

The low-cost airline had initially planned to begin the route in June, linking Kuala Lumpur to Bahrain as part of a longer connection to London’s Gatwick Airport. The service is now expected to commence between August and September, subject to market and operational conditions.

AirAsia X said passengers affected by the delay will be offered refunds or alternative booking arrangements as it adjusts its network plans in response to the evolving security situation.

The airline said the decision reflects a “measured approach” to expansion, while reaffirming its long-term commitment to establishing a hub in Bahrain as part of its global connectivity strategy.

“Bahrain continues to play an important role in our long-term growth plans and regional connectivity strategy, and we remain focused on launching services to both Bahrain and London Gatwick when the operating environment is better aligned with our operational and commercial objectives,” AirAsia General Manager Benyamin Ismail said.

The planned Bahrain–London route was expected to strengthen AirAsia X’s long-haul network by using Bahrain as a transit hub between Southeast Asia and Europe, a model increasingly adopted by low-cost long-haul carriers seeking to bypass traditional European hub congestion.

However, escalating geopolitical tensions in parts of the Middle East have raised concerns across the aviation industry, particularly regarding flight safety, insurance costs and route viability. Several carriers have adjusted schedules or rerouted flights in response to the heightened risk environment.

AirAsia X has faced a challenging operating backdrop in recent periods, including volatile jet fuel prices and cost pressures. Earlier this year, the airline reported a quarterly net loss, prompting capacity adjustments that included a 10% reduction in flights and the introduction of a fuel surcharge of around 20%.

The airline said its broader recovery strategy remains intact, but acknowledged that external shocks continue to influence demand, pricing and route expansion decisions across its network.

Aviation analysts note that long-haul low-cost carriers remain particularly sensitive to fuel price volatility and geopolitical disruptions due to their thin-margin operating models and reliance on high aircraft utilisation.

Despite the postponement, AirAsia X maintains that its Bahrain expansion remains part of its long-term growth roadmap, with management indicating that new international routes will proceed once operating conditions stabilise.

The delay highlights the wider impact of regional instability on global aviation flows, particularly on emerging long-haul budget carriers attempting to rebuild post-pandemic international networks while navigating a volatile geopolitical and fuel-cost environment.
