Egypt rules out summer power cuts, denies household electricity tariff hikes

Egypt has ruled out electricity load shedding during the summer season and denied reports that household electricity tariffs would increase from July 1, as authorities move to ensure stable power supplies amid rising demand.

Mansour Abdel Ghany, spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said the national grid is operating efficiently and is supported by ongoing infrastructure development projects and coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to secure fuel supplies for power generation.

Speaking on the television programme El Hekaya on MBC Masr, Abdel Ghany dismissed speculation of an increase in household electricity prices, saying there would be no new tariff adjustments affecting residential consumers from July 1.

He clarified, however, that a 20 percent surcharge would apply to some high-consumption commercial and service activities during peak-demand periods, in accordance with existing electricity pricing mechanisms.

The announcement comes as Egypt prepares for a seasonal rise in electricity consumption, with government forecasts indicating demand could increase by around 8 percent this summer compared with the previous year.

Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat and Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi have been reviewing possible scenarios and contingency measures across both sectors to ensure power plants have sufficient fuel supplies during periods of peak consumption.

The government has been working to strengthen the electricity network through upgrades to generation capacity, transmission infrastructure and operational efficiency as demand continues to grow due to population growth, economic activity and higher temperatures during the summer months.
