Egypt strengthens power grid ahead of expected 7% summer electricity demand surge

Egypt is accelerating efforts to reinforce its national electricity grid and expand renewable energy capacity ahead of a projected 7 percent rise in electricity demand during the summer of 2026, officials said Thursday.

The government says the preparations are aimed at ensuring grid stability and preventing disruptions during peak consumption periods, as temperatures rise and demand for cooling increases across the country.

Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat has instructed production, transmission and distribution companies to raise readiness levels nationwide, according to a statement from the ministry.

The directive focuses on maintaining uninterrupted power supply, improving operational efficiency and ensuring the grid can absorb higher loads during peak summer months.

Authorities said the national grid had successfully managed record consumption levels in the previous year, but warned that continued demand growth requires sustained investment in infrastructure and maintenance.

The minister stressed that modernising the electricity network remains a strategic priority for Egypt, particularly as the country expands its renewable energy portfolio and integrates new generation capacity.

Egypt has set a target to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 45% by 2028, part of a broader transition strategy aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving long-term energy security.

Officials said implementation timelines for renewable energy projects are being accelerated to support this goal, with increased focus on solar and wind developments across key regions.

The government is also working to strengthen transformer stations and transmission infrastructure to accommodate additional renewable capacity and reduce pressure on existing systems.

Upgrades are expected to improve grid resilience, particularly in high-demand urban centres and industrial zones where electricity consumption continues to rise.

During a high-level meeting with senior electricity sector officials and utility executives, Esmat reviewed emergency preparedness plans, maintenance schedules and operational efficiency measures ahead of the summer season.

Discussions also covered coordination with the National Energy Control Centre, preventive maintenance systems, spare-parts availability and contingency planning to minimise outages.

Officials said improving fuel efficiency across power plants remains a key priority, alongside efforts to prioritise lower-consumption facilities during peak periods to optimise supply.

Egypt’s electricity demand has been rising steadily in recent years due to population growth, urban expansion and increased industrial activity, placing additional pressure on the national grid.

At the same time, authorities are seeking to balance short-term reliability needs with long-term structural reforms aimed at expanding renewable energy and modernising transmission networks.

Energy analysts say the coming summer will serve as a key test of the country’s ability to manage rising demand while maintaining progress on its clean energy transition.

The government maintains that continued investment in grid infrastructure, combined with expanding renewable capacity, will be critical to ensuring energy stability and supporting economic growth in the years ahead.
