Ethiopian Airlines has once again been recognised as the leading carrier on the continent after securing the title of Best Airline in Africa at the 2026 APEX Passenger Choice Awards, reinforcing its long standing dominance in African aviation.
The award, announced on 4 May 2026 in Addis Ababa, is based entirely on independently verified passenger feedback, making it one of the most credible indicators of customer satisfaction in the global airline industry. Unlike traditional industry awards judged by panels, the APEX system draws from real traveller experiences, analysing more than one million verified flight ratings submitted through TripIt across over 600 airlines worldwide.
For Ethiopian Airlines, the recognition reflects more than just branding. It signals consistent delivery across key performance areas that matter most to passengers, including reliability, onboard comfort, customer service, and overall travel experience. At a time when global aviation continues to recover and evolve after years of disruption, maintaining this level of consistency is not a small feat.

Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew described the award as particularly meaningful because it comes directly from passengers rather than industry insiders. He emphasised that the achievement is a reflection of the collective effort of the airline’s workforce, from ground operations to cabin crew and technical teams, all contributing to what he described as a seamless travel experience.
APEX Group CEO Dr Joe Leader also highlighted the scale and transparency behind the recognition, noting that Ethiopian Airlines continues to set the benchmark for African carriers through strong operational performance and a clear customer focused approach.
The airline’s continued success is closely tied to its long term growth strategy and aggressive investment in infrastructure and fleet modernisation. Over the years, Ethiopian Airlines has built one of the youngest and most advanced fleets in Africa, operating aircraft such as the Boeing 737, 777 and 787, alongside the Airbus A350 and De Havilland Q400. This modern fleet not only improves fuel efficiency and operational reliability but also enhances passenger comfort, a key factor in maintaining high satisfaction ratings.
Beyond hardware, the airline has also invested heavily in digital transformation, improving booking systems, customer engagement platforms, and overall service delivery. These upgrades are part of a broader effort to remain competitive in an industry increasingly shaped by technology and shifting consumer expectations.

Ethiopian Airlines’ dominance also stems from its strategic positioning as a continental connector. With a network spanning more than 160 passenger and cargo destinations across five continents, the airline plays a critical role in linking Africa to global markets. Its hub in Addis Ababa has become one of the busiest and most important transit points on the continent.
A major pillar of its expansion strategy is its multi hub approach, which extends its reach through partnerships and joint ventures across Africa. These include operations in Lomé with ASKY Airlines, Lilongwe with Malawi Airlines, Lusaka with Zambia Airways, and Kinshasa with Air Congo. This model allows Ethiopian Airlines to deepen intra African connectivity while strengthening its presence in key regional markets.
As a member of the Star Alliance, the airline also benefits from global partnerships that enhance route networks, streamline travel experiences, and expand its international footprint.
Industry analysts often point to Ethiopian Airlines as a rare success story in African aviation, a sector that has historically struggled with financial instability, governance challenges, and operational inefficiencies. Its ability to maintain profitability, expand aggressively, and consistently win international awards sets it apart from many of its peers.

Looking ahead, the airline remains focused on its Vision 2035 strategy, which aims to position it among the world’s top 20 aviation groups. This includes further investment in fleet expansion, cargo operations, and aviation training infrastructure, as well as continued emphasis on service excellence.
The latest APEX recognition not only cements Ethiopian Airlines’ leadership in Africa but also reinforces its growing influence on the global aviation stage, where it continues to compete with some of the world’s most established carriers.
