Ghana, South Korea sign visa waiver agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders

Ghana and South Korea have signed a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Africa-Korea Foreign Ministers Meeting by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun.

Announcing the development, Ablakwa described the accord as the first visa waiver agreement concluded between the two countries in nearly five decades of formal diplomatic relations.

The agreement is expected to facilitate official travel by diplomats and government officials, reduce administrative barriers, and enhance cooperation between Accra and Seoul.

According to Ghana’s foreign minister, the arrangement reflects the growing partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to deepening political, economic and diplomatic ties.

He added that discussions would continue on the possibility of extending visa-free travel arrangements to holders of ordinary passports in the future.

Should such negotiations succeed, the move could further boost tourism, trade, business travel and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

Ghana and South Korea have maintained diplomatic relations for nearly 50 years, with cooperation spanning trade, education, technology transfer, infrastructure development and capacity-building programmes.

South Korea has emerged as an important development partner for several African countries, including Ghana, through investments, technical assistance and support for industrialisation initiatives.

The signing comes amid renewed efforts by both African and Asian countries to strengthen diplomatic engagement and expand economic partnerships through platforms such as the Africa-Korea Foreign Ministers Meeting.

Analysts say the visa waiver agreement could help facilitate more frequent high-level engagements and official exchanges, contributing to stronger bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.

The agreement is expected to take effect following the completion of the necessary domestic procedures in both countries.
