Morocco has been elected on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in Addis Ababa, for a two-year term on the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), winning the vote in the first round. This marks the Kingdom’s third time on the permanent decision-making body responsible for conflict prevention, management, and resolution across the continent.
The election took place during the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, held ahead of the 39th Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for February 14–15, 2026. Morocco secured more than two-thirds of the votes, totaling 34.
Speaking to the press after the election, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said the vote recognizes Morocco’s efforts toward a stable Africa. He highlighted the Kingdom’s approach, grounded in respect for international law, pursuit of peaceful solutions, and a rational framework for conflict resolution.

Since rejoining the African Union in 2017, Morocco has previously served on the PSC for a two-year term (2018–2020) and a three-year term (2022–2025). Bourita emphasized that these earlier mandates enabled Morocco to contribute to improving the Council’s working methods and implementing best practices in collaboration with other member states, with a responsible and inclusive approach.
The Moroccan diplomat also stressed that, according to King Mohammed VI’s vision, peace and stability on the continent are inseparable from development. The vote in favor of Morocco reflects recognition of the Kingdom’s initiatives in mediation, peacekeeping, and fostering dialogue.
Building on its prior experience, Morocco is now positioned to further strengthen its role and make a positive contribution to Africa’s security and stability within the PSC, a key AU body tasked with managing crises and security challenges.
