Côte d’Ivoire has unveiled a major US$212 million tourism and leisure complex near Abidjan as part of efforts to expand the country’s visitor economy, create jobs and support economic diversification.
The government officially launched the Songon Parc Oriental project on June 12 in Songon-M’Brathé, west of the economic capital, describing it as a flagship development designed to create a new tourism hub while promoting local economic inclusion.
Authorities said the project will combine tourism infrastructure with community development initiatives, including the construction of a school, a health centre, a multipurpose youth centre and a foundation aimed at supporting the economic empowerment of young people and women.
Tourism Minister Siandou Fofana said the initiative reflects the government’s ambition to develop modern, inclusive and sustainable tourism infrastructure while ensuring surrounding communities benefit directly from the investment.
The project is being developed by a consortium led by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The first phase will involve an investment of more than CFA120 billion (US$212 million) and will cover about 120 hectares.
The initial stage will include the construction of a water park, children’s recreational facilities and a modern hotel designed to attract both domestic and international visitors.
Government projections indicate that the first phase will generate around 3,000 direct jobs, with about 90 percent expected to benefit young people from the Songon area. An additional 1,500 indirect jobs are expected through hospitality, catering, tourism services and related activities.
The second phase of the project will introduce a snow and ice complex, which authorities describe as the first of its kind in West Africa, as well as a conference hotel aimed at expanding the business tourism market.
A third phase will involve future expansion using land reserved for additional developments.
The Songon Parc Oriental project forms part of Côte d’Ivoire’s wider strategy to increase tourism’s contribution to economic growth and employment.
The government’s tourism development efforts are being driven by the “Sublime Côte d’Ivoire” programme, which focuses on improving tourism infrastructure, promoting destinations and strengthening digital services within the sector.
Recent figures show tourism has become an increasingly important part of the Ivorian economy. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country welcomed 6.7 million visitors in 2025, generating around CFA1.1 trillion in revenue, equivalent to 8.7 percent of GDP.
The sector currently supports approximately 675,000 direct and indirect jobs, highlighting its role as a major source of employment and economic opportunity.
Beyond attracting visitors, authorities see the Songon project as a tool for tackling youth unemployment and supporting regional development.
According to World Bank data based on International Labour Organization estimates, unemployment among Ivorians aged between 15 and 24 remains around 13.4 percent, making job creation a key priority for the government.
Officials believe large-scale tourism projects can help address this challenge by creating opportunities in hospitality, transport, entertainment, retail and other service industries.
The foundation stone for the Songon Parc Oriental is expected to be laid in September 2026, with construction scheduled to begin in January 2027. The complex is expected to open in October 2028.
The government says the project will strengthen Côte d’Ivoire’s position as a regional tourism destination while contributing to long-term economic growth and greater inclusion for local communities.
