Toyota has launched an updated generation of its Hilux pickup in South Africa, introducing significant changes to one of the country’s most popular bakkies as competition intensifies in the one-ton pickup market.
The refreshed Hilux features upgrades across safety, connectivity, comfort and efficiency while maintaining the durability and reliability that have made the model a leading choice among commercial operators, farmers and private buyers.
Toyota said the new model represents the most substantial evolution of the Hilux since the eighth generation and was designed to meet changing customer expectations around technology and convenience without compromising its traditional strengths.
The Hilux remains one of South Africa’s best-selling vehicles and plays a major role in sectors including agriculture, construction and small businesses, where reliability and operating costs are key considerations.
Among the biggest changes is the introduction of Toyota Safety Sense 3 on selected models, bringing a wider range of driver-assistance technologies.
The system includes improved pre-collision detection, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist and proactive driving assistance.
For the first time on the Hilux range, Toyota has added features such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and safe exit assist, aimed at improving safety in everyday driving conditions.
Selected models also receive enhanced theft protection through Ultra Wide Band smart key technology, designed to reduce risks linked to relay attacks.
Inside the cabin, Toyota has redesigned the interior with a stronger focus on digital features and improved usability.
Higher-spec versions now include a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, along with wireless smartphone connectivity, USB-C charging and updated storage options.
Toyota said the changes were intended to make the vehicle more suitable for both work and lifestyle use.
The flagship Legend models also introduce a new mild hybrid option, marking the first time the Hilux has been offered with hybrid assistance in South Africa.
The 48-volt mild hybrid system is designed to improve responsiveness at lower speeds, enhance refinement in urban driving and contribute to improved fuel efficiency.
Toyota has also adjusted suspension tuning, steering systems and structural mounting to improve ride comfort and stability, particularly on gravel roads and uneven terrain commonly encountered by many South African drivers.
Electric power steering has been introduced to improve manoeuvrability at low speeds and reduce driver fatigue.
The Hilux line-up has been simplified into four grades: SRX, Raider, Raider X and Legend, with the Legend positioned as the premium flagship model.
Pricing for the updated range starts at R658,500, while the top-spec Legend 4×4 mild hybrid model is priced at R999,900.
The launch comes as South Africa’s pickup segment becomes increasingly competitive, with rival manufacturers adding more advanced technology and comfort features to attract both business and private buyers.
Toyota said the updated Hilux is positioned to maintain its reputation for toughness while adapting to a market increasingly shaped by digital features, safety expectations and improved efficiency.
