Apple strengthens privacy for iPhone-android messaging

Apple has introduced new privacy and security improvements for messaging between iPhones and Android devices through updates to the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard, marking a significant step toward more secure cross-platform communication.

The changes are aimed at improving privacy protections for users who exchange messages between Apple’s iOS devices and Android smartphones, an area that has historically lacked the end-to-end encryption available in Apple’s iMessage system.

Apple began supporting RCS messaging in recent iOS updates after years of relying primarily on SMS and MMS for communication with non-iPhone users. RCS offers features such as high-quality media sharing, typing indicators, read receipts and improved group messaging.

The latest privacy enhancements are expected to strengthen encryption and reduce the exposure of user data during cross-platform conversations.

Google has long promoted RCS as a replacement for traditional text messaging and has already implemented end-to-end encryption for some Android-to-Android chats through its Messages app.
